St Maarten

After two nice relaxing days at sea, we docked bright and early in Phillipsburg, on the Dutch side of St Maarten.  We had thought about arranging a private tour for just the six of us, but decided against it, as we really didn't want to pay for the whole day and just use three or so hours in the morning. So we joined a bustling taxi queue and were packed into a semi- air- conditioned van with other travelers headed to Maho (otherwise known as airplane) beach.
We first learned about this airport from the travel channel’s show on the 10 scariest airports in the world and wanted to see for ourselves.  And the kids wanted to swim at the beach, so we figured to kill two birds with one stone.

When we arrived at Maho, there were not to many options for standing so we were lucky to get a seat at the beachfront bar.  It had overpriced beverages and terrible restrooms, but an excellent view.  Brian bravely led the kids down the rocks to a little enclosed area of sand and sea. So they got to "swim" (more like wade) after all.

After watching a few small planes come in to land, it was time for the main attraction- the arrival of KLM's 747.  The excitement in the large crowd grew as the plane was spotted from afar, made a big circle, and came in to land, which seemed only a few feet above our heads!  Truly a thrill and something you'd never experience in the states.

Totally Awesome

There were more planes to come, of course, but the day was getting even hotter, the kids hungry, and everyone a little cranky.  Service at the bar/restaurant was slow or nonexistent, so we decided to grab a cab back to the ship.   Looking back, I think a private tour would have been the way to go. Maybe visit a swimmable beach on the French side, have lunch, then do the airport and head back.  But, it certainly was a great experience and worth the effort to get there.

Character sightings

Day one aboard the ship I noticed that the on board itinerary included a lot of character meet and greets.  I thought my kids would want to meet Mickey and maybe one or two of his friends, but had no idea how magical the experience would be for them.  They were elated every time they spotted a character and could not believe that they were all on our ship.

It was absolutely adorable.  Mickey was a huge hit.  Of course Disney had a thousand different versions of Mickey: Captain Mickey, Pirate Mickey, Halloween Mickey, Islander Mickey and on and on. I would love to know the revenue and profit margins Disney makes on their formal photographs of kids and characters.  It seemed like everyone on our cruise was buying the formal pictures.  I will admit that we did buy a few. These are ones we took with iPhones or our own cameras.

Catherine met the Frozen Princesses but I think she was a bit scared.  My mom and I completely bribed her to wear her princess dress as she is not a fan of dressing up. They asked if she would want to visit them in their kingdom (forget the name) and she was like "No".

They talked about Donald Duck all day long.

The Orlando Airport and our hotel in Cape Canaveral both had NASA astronauts hanging around (note Logan's pj's).

"the Mickey boat"

We just got back from the most amazing vacation ever.  We took a Disney Cruise with my parents out of Port Canaveral.  We were celebrating my moms 70th birthday.

The kids were troopers and for the most part travelled very well.   Catherine had a few issues like fear of the boat toilets and a lack of patience in regards to waiting in a line.  Any line.  On the last day she had an epic meltdown when we were going through customs.  I just had to smile because we were the parents of the kid wailing hysterically and flailing about on the floor.

Logan and Catherine continue to make us laugh in regards to their little conversations amongst themselves.  Catherine would get confused on the boat when we were in our actual room and would ask when we were getting back on the Mickey Mouse Boat. Logan would explain that we never left and were still on the boat.  Catherine did not fly with that.

After a few nights of dining, they would take pretend waiter orders.  They would grab a pad of paper and pen and scribble down dinner orders.  Catherine, of course, would change your order if she did not like it.  She told Brian one time that he could only eat eggs and “wine wine”!

This first set of pictures is us at the airport.

Orlando's airport was very kid friendly (surprise surprise)  I was impressed with the salt water aquarium
